Fishworks

Mar 11, 2019  —

I really didn’t know what to expect from Fishworks but that didn’t stop me from crossing an ocean to get there (okay, I crossed Burrard Inlet on the seabus). Conveniently located just a short walk away from the seabus terminal, this resto is located in Lower Lonsdale (or LoLo as the cool kids call it).

The high-ceiling room is bright and airy, with a small rowboat suspended from the ceiling. Textured wooden tables and cabinetry, along with quaint fishing-village decor elements, create a warm and inviting atmosphere that says, “Take off your coat and stay a while.” And we did.

Fishworks offers an abundant range of Ocean Wise seafood, from fresh shucked oysters to halibut poutine to seafood paella. I had a difficult time choosing what to order. But when the waiter told us that the fish of the day was sablefish (aka Alaskan black cod), my decision was made right away.

Here is what I had (or tried):

  • Lobster Bisque. A generous serving of a rich and creamy soup topped with sour cream and a sprig of herbs. While the dosh was good, I felt that it lacked a bit of flavour punch and a deeper lobster flavour.
  • Seared Scallops with ponzu marinated eggplant and toasted cashews. I really like the complex flavour profile of this dish, ranging from the deep citrus and umami flavours of the ponzu eggplant to the earthy creaminess of the cashew sauce.
  • Alaskan Sablefish with roasted veggies, a potato galette and tarragon beurre blanc sauce. THIS DISH WAS TO DIE FOR! And, I rarely use caps to describe dishes, so you know this dish must really be outstanding. Four of us ordered this dish and we were all very impressed. The bold and bright flavours of the tarragon sauce paired perfectly with the satiny and creamy texture of the fish.
  • Earl Grey ice cream. While this dessert was a refreshing finish to the meal, it was not a standout.
  • Dark chocolate fish. A complimentary treat, these dark chocolate morsels were rich and buttery with melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness.

Prices are very reasonable, with appetizers ranging from $8 to $18 and main courses in the $20-$35 range. Considering the high quality ingredients and great flavours, Fishworks offers great value for money.

So would I go back? Definitely. And I would even cross an ocean to do it.
