Feb 21, 2019 — Have you ever gone to an amusement park and were so excited that you couldn’t decide which ride to go on first? Well, that is how I felt at Torafuku when I first looked at their menu. With so many creative and compelling choices, it took us nearly half an hour to curate the perfect selection of items. Why pick one ride when you can go on them all? Our server was also extremely helpful with suggestions and tips of what to pair together. She even offered to split our cocktails into mini glasses so that we could sample a wider range of their awesome Asian-inspired and tea-infused cocktail repertoire. We finally ended up sampling from every corner of the menu – Dan Dan Mazesoba (broth-less ramen), Lucky Dumplings, General Tao’s Chicken Wings, Gimme a Beet (fried beets and artichokes with plum powder and togarashi aioli), Everyday I’m Brusselin (roasted brussel sprouts, artichokes, black bean sauce, roasted chickpeas), Higher Steaks (wagyu beef tataki with ponzu sauce) and a couple of stix (shiitake mushroom and tomato-basil). Trying each dish as it arrived at the table was like opening up a gift on Christmas morning…a flavour surprise with each new mouthful. The star dishes for me were the Everyday I’m Brusselin (perfect combination of soft and crunchy textures, deep and rich umami flavour paired with the sweet earthiness of root veggies), the Dan Dan Mazesoba (thick velvety noodles bathed in a fresh cracked yolk and twirled with savory ground pork, bok choy and seaweed strips), and the Gimme a Beet (sweet and tender beets paired with crunchy fried artichoke petals). The only dish that disappointed was the Lucky Dumplings – the filling was bland and they tasted like they had come out of the freezer. But I am willing to overlook that one fault since all of the other dishes were excellent. On top of everything, Torafuku offers great value for money. We ordered 7 dishes to share and were filled to the gills for just $33 each. That’s cheaper than a day pass at the PNE and without the nausea. Would I go back? Absolutely.
